Astro-Colony ’12

            Astro-Colony ‘12

The year: 3039

The design project:

You and/or your partner have been invited to submit a proposal for an off-earth colony which will support human life.

You will need to submit (meaning, turn in) the following,             in order:

1.         Create a design-team name and logo.

2..            You / your team will need to establish written criteria for human needs for life off-earth.   Consider the following human needs:  water, heat / cooling, air to breath, food, shelter, recreation, wastes, transportation.  Are there more needs to consider?  Take into account the location in which your colony will operate: no gravity or tremendous gravity, on a moon with temperatures that would kill a human instantly if exposed to them, heat that would vaporize humans, long periods with no sunlight, etc.            How many people will need to live on the colony?            What is the purpose of the colony?  What do the people who live there do?  Why are they there?  How long will they remain … how long is their mission?

Keep a bibliography of resources you use to figure out your colony;

books, internet, experts, etc.            You will need to turn this in at the end.

3.         You and your team will need to make sketches of several different views of the outside of your colony in its environment and a floor-plan map of the inside.  From them make finished drawings of one view of the exterior of the colony in its habitat and one finished drawing of the floor-plan map.

Be sure your colony’s design meets the needs of human life and the purpose of the colony.

4.         You will need to build a small-scale model of your colony proposal.

It should fit on a desk top.

5.            Your team will present your colony ideas (criteria, finished drawings and model) as a design company to the class.  When you do you will need to explain where the colony will be placed, the conditions of that place, and how your design will support human life and activity there.

6.         Your team will turn in to me all sketches, drawings, your list of criteria and your bibliography of resources used to design your colony.

Presentations to the class begin:  May  ________

Cape Cod Bulletin 10/10

October 10

Dear Parents,

We’re down to the wire now.  All systems go.  Please be sure to send in your funding contribution no later than the 14th, this Friday.  I’ll need time to get to the bank.

$115.00 for students for the week.  $125.00 for adults for the week.  Part-time adults will need to check with me for the costs of the days they will be with us.

Checks may be made out to “MES”.

Also, please be sure your child brings warm clothes and rain gear.  At this time of year the weather at the Cape can be gloriously warm and mild but it can also be stormy and chilly.  Since we’ll be outside a great deal, we need to be prepared for the possible conditions.

PLEASE REMEMBER TOO THAT WE WILL BE DEPARTING FROM SCHOOL AT 8:45 ON SUNDAY THE 23rd.  WE NEED TO LEAVE PROMPTLY SO THAT WE MAKE OUR APPOINTMENT AT PLIMOTH PLANTATION.  STUDENTS SHOULD ARRIVE AT SCHOOL BY AROUND 8:30.

Thank you.

In order to facilitate our social climate conversation and as a point of departure, I would ask the following:

Please  list two or three “hopes” for your child this year.  They may be in the social sphere, academic life, in or out of school.  No names, please.  I’ll collate the list so that we can examine our collective hopes and discuss.

You may write them below and send them back with your child.  I’ll need them by Wednesday morning so that I’ll be able to get them collated before our meeting that evening.  Thank you.               David
