On Monday William, the Ma’sai warrior, took us far away from the hills of Vermont as he talked to us about his life in Kenya showing us pictures and passing around artifacts such as a piece of lion fur. William told us about the scarcity of clean water and how he and his family drink from the same stream as the many animals who live on the Masai Mara Reserve. This sounded very familiar after our Art for Water project several weeks ago. And we are invited to help. A huge jug is waiting to receive your pennies and change on the table outside the office. Thank you to Linda, our art teacher, for arranging William’s visit and connecting us with people far away.

The week ends closer to home with Hogback Day. At this writing perfect weather is predicted. The view from the fire tower will be amazing. Check with your child to hear about the day’s activities – from hiking to kite making. Hearty thanks to Carol Berner and Patrick Johnson for planning the day and to the following activity leaders from the community: Lexis Atsalis-Gogel, Raven & Kate Averill, Mike Clough, Ron LaBrusciano, Mike Purcell, Dan Macarthur, and our own Jen O’Donnell & Patrick Johnson.

Our small school provides the opportunity to know our students very well and to plan learning with each child in mind. On Wednesday afternoon we did just that. We reviewed progress and needs of students and thought about how we can best address these next year. Erik, Christine, and Yvonne plan closely with teachers so that they can support students in the classroom as well as work with them individually and in small groups. It’s important that schedules enable them to be in classrooms during math and reading. This means that classroom teachers must also work together as they plan schedules so that everyone isn’t teaching the same subject at the same time. We got a good start on this on Wednesday.

Over the past month the 7th grade has gained and lost a student. Please join me in wishing Josh all the best at Leland and Gray and in welcoming Tom to MES.

For the past two months Julia Hampton, Julianne Mills, and Pam Burke have been running and walking and cheering on the girls in 3rd-5th grade. The culmination of all their work is the Girls On the Run 5k race/walk this Saturday at BUHS. Good luck, girls!

April 2012

The Art for Water program that came to our school was a marvelous whole school effort that engaged MES students in diverse ways.

In Rhythms, we were not short of ideas. Water, Water, Water. Ropes. Scarves. We moved like waves, and whirlpools, and eddies. And, we became still and balanced in order to float wooden dowels end-to-end between one another’s hands.

We watched the Vanuatu Women’s Water Snake Dance that is performed waist-deep in the ocean and uses the ocean as the “drum” to make the music.

MES students were also introduced to rocks-in-water, an exploration that has traveled all the way from Auroville, India where students work with the five elements (fire, air, earth, water, wind) in their movement classes.

Put three differently colored sea stones in the bottom of a clear glass of water: watch, wait, touch the surface of the water, submerge, touch the rocks, pick up the rocks, hold the rocks, and slowly place them back into the water.

Observation & experience:

induction/deduction

But the photos say it all.

The Marlboro School District supports Publicly Funded Prekindergarten for children between the ages of 3 and 5 who reside in the town of Marlboro

Applications for the 2012-2013 school year are due June 1, 2012.
Print out and complete this application.

Q: What is publicly funded prekindergarten education?

Publicly funded prekindergarten education is defined as:

Ten hours per week of developmentally appropriate early development and learning experiences that are based on Vermont’s Early Learning Standards.

Children who reside in Marlboro and are between the ages of three -five are eligible. Prekindergarten education is limited to the academic year (September 2012-June 2013).

Q: Where are these publicly funded prekindergarten programs?

The Marlboro School District’s publicly funded prekindergarten programs are located in community private early care and education programs that meet specific quality standards. The community early care and education programs that Marlboro School District partners with are:

. The Meetinghouse School Green Valley School
. Timson Hill Preschool West Bee Nursey School
. Rock River School Winston Prouty
Neighborhood Schoolhouse Hilltop Montessori

Q: Is this10 hour/week prekindergarten program tuition free?

The prekindergarten program offered through a partner early care and education program may charge families the difference between the actual costs of providing the 10 hour prekindergarten program and what Marlboro School District pays. Families would continue to be charged fully for whatever care and education program the child needs beyond the 10 hours/week during the academic year.

Q: Is my child eligible for publicly funded prekindergarten?

If your child is 3 years old by September 1, 2012 and resides in Marlboro, then your child is eligible to participate.

Please Note: If we receive more applications than we have funding to support, then we will need to use a random selection process to determine which children receive publicly funded prekindergarten education. We will inform you whether your child has a slot by 6/18/12.

Q: How do I apply?

Print out and complete this application. Applications must be postmarked by June 1rst in order to be considered.

Ticks are out early this year, time to start a daily routine of checking for ticks.Remember that students at school are outside everyday. Below is some helpful general information.

Ticks are small, insect-like creatures that live in woods and fields. They attach to you as you brush past bushes, plants, and grass. Once on you, ticks often move to a warm, moist location, like the armpits, groin, and hair although they can be found anywhere on the body. They typically attach firmly to your skin and begin to draw blood for their meal. This process is painless and most people will not notice the bite.

Ticks can be fairly large — about the size of a pencil eraser — or so small that they are almost impossible to see. Ticks can cause a variety of health conditions ranging from harmless to serious.

Symptoms

While most ticks do not carry diseases, some ticks do. The most common and serious disease transmitted by ticks in the northeastern U.S. is:

Lyme disease

Watch for the symptoms of these diseases in the weeks following a tick bite:

Fever

Headache

Muscle or joint aches

Other flu-like symptoms

Stiff neck

Swollen lymph nodes

Weakness

**Watch for a red spot (sometimes shaped like a bull’s eye) or rash starting at the location of the bite (and/or spread across the body)**

DO NOT

Do NOT try to burn the tick with a match or other hot object.

Do NOT twist the tick when pulling it out.

Do NOT try to kill, smother, or lubricate the tick with oil, alcohol, vaseline, or similar material.

When to Contact a Medical Professional

Call your doctor if you have not been able to remove the entire tick. Also call if in the days or weeks following a tick bite you develop:

A rash (all over body or bulls-eye rash at the site of the bite)

Flu-like symptoms

Joint pain or redness

Swollen lymph nodes

Facial numbness or paralysis

Call 911 if you have any signs of:

Chest pain

Heart palpitations

Paralysis

Severe headache

Trouble breathing

First Aid

If a tick is attached to you, follow these steps to remove it:

Grasp the tick close to its head or mouth with tweezers. Do not use your bare fingers. If needed, use a tissue or paper towel.

Pull it straight out with a slow and steady motion. Avoid squeezing or crushing the tick. Be careful not to leave the head embedded in the skin.

Clean the area thoroughly with soap and water. Also wash your hands thoroughly.

Save the tick in a jar and watch carefully for the next week or two for signs of Lyme disease.

If all parts of the tick cannot be removed, get medical help. Bring the tick in the jar to your doctor’s appointment.

Prevention

Wear long pants and long sleeves when walking through heavy brush, tall grass, and densely wooded areas.

Pull your socks over the outside of your pants to prevent ticks from crawling up inside.

Keep your shirt tucked into your pants.

Wear light-colored clothes so that ticks can be spotted easily.

Spray your clothes with insect repellant.

Check your clothes and skin frequently while in the woods.

After returning home:

Remove your clothes and thoroughly inspect all skin surface areas, including your scalp. Ticks can quickly climb up the length of your body.

Some ticks are large and easy to locate. Other ticks can be quite small, so carefully evaluate all black or brown spots on the skin.

If possible ask someone to help you examine your body for ticks.

An adult should examine children carefully.

Dear Families, collecting box tops from the “Box Tops for Education Program” is an easy way to make a little money for the school. Look for the Box Top logo on hundreds of boxed products at the Co-op, Hannafords & Price Chopper (you’ll find them on cereal, granola bars, sandwich bags, etc.). Each one is worth 10¢ for our school. Just tear them off the box or wrapper and send them in to school for Pam & Alice, Box Top coordinators. Collecting a bunch before you send them in is fine, just pay attention to the expiration dates.
Email Pam at pburke (at) marlboroschool.net with any questions.
