Mt.
Chocorua! We had spectacular weather, determined climbers, and all around cooperative spirit.   As well as climbing we looked at sculpture, learned how to trust each other, and ate some great pizza.    Here’s a special thank-you to our chaperones Jen Carr, Kate Flemming, Richard Hawes, and Philip Jonanson.   Thank-you also to all who baked goodies and to Gay Maxwell for her pesto.   Look for photos on the web page.

Sept. 17, 2007

Dear Parents,Thank-you all for joining us for parent night last Wednesday; it was gratifying to have so many of you there listening so intently to all we had to say.   Our only regret  is that because we talked so long about curriculum we had little time for some other matters.  We forgot completely to tell you anything about the mountain trip!   Oops!  We will be leaving on Monday Sept. 24th to drive to the white mountains of NH.  On the way  we will stop at the Saint Gauden’s home and historic site.   Then we will continue on our way to Tamworth, NH and

Mt.
Chorcorua.   Chorcorua is a rocky peak in the
Sandwich range.  There is a legend that goes with the name which we will learn about.  In
Tamworth we will be “camping” in the barn at The Brass Hart Inn.   They have  a web site  if you want to learn more about them.   Tue. We will climb; it looks as if we have a number of chaperones which means each student will be able to climb at his or her own pace.   Not all climbers need to go to the summit.  Some people may choose to turn around part way up.   Wed. we will return home in time to meet the busses.  We also forgot to tell you about our
Antioch intern Jessie Gagne-Hall.  She will be working with us Mon.-Thur. through December.  We are delighted to have her help and she has already showed her skills in teaching and kayaking during our activities on mystery day.       It would have been nice also to have more time to talk about the curriculum and fundraising for the spring trip to
Costa Rica.  You may have heard that the students voted in their last government meeting to donate whatever they make in design technology to the class to be raffled, sold or auctioned and the proceeds put toward class funds.   This will be a great help but we still need a lot more ideas and work on fundraising.  When we get back from
New Hampshire we will try and find another time to meet to talk more about our curriculum and fundraising goalsFinally, I am still worried about the time it takes to get a passport these days.   At this point I know of only five students who have a valid passport.   And, I have only heard back from   one other of you that he has applied.    This needs to be done RIGHT AWAY! PLEASE, PLEASE, let us know where you are in this process and if you need any help, with finances, pictures, or filing out the forms. Those of you who have already expressed a need for financial assistance please see Tim or Rachel privately and we will do what we can.  Enclosed for those of you from whom I haven’t heard, is a check list to let me know where you are in this process.  With the new requirements for passports for
Canada going into effect in January the lag time for receiving your passport after applying can be six months or more.  Two years ago we had the spiral shop take passport photos when they took school photos.  I really don’t want to wait that long this year.  I want to hear that those of you who don’t have passports for your child have submitted the application by the end of this month at the latest.     This may take some time and planning for some of you because BOTH parents  need to be present at the passport office (in the post office in
Brattleboro) when  you hand in your application.  Please take the time in the next week to find a time to do this if you haven’t already.   That’s all for now.  Thank-you for your support in all that we try and do for your children.

Thanks to all of you who gave us your hopes and fears for your son or daughter. We will be discussing many of these during our parent meeting this Wednesday.  (Please note we have moved the start time to 7:15 to make it a little easier for those of you who will be attending Jodi’s parent night as well.)
Thanks also to Lloyd’s and Skylar’s parents for putting in the extra time on the popcorn snacks for the fair and Andy Hauty for making caramel apples.  We made about $200.00; every little bit helps!
