Another chance to win $50 in Play Money!

On Monday I announce the winner of the monkey key chain. The kids have been so great at strengthening behaviors, it’s almost like I have a new group of kids coming to AfterSchool!
As a reward I am going to shorten the length of the contest to end in a week so more kids can win key chains or other cool trinkets. The winners will be announced in class and in Friday notes.

Read Friday Notes and you could win $50 Play Money!

Making special valentines with Marjorie on Thursdays has turned out to be a big favorite. Marjorie has brought in beautiful satin ribbon and lace dollies plus special paper from her own stock and the kids are water coloring up a storm….some lucky people are going to get some very special Valentines this year!

Plus I am happy to report that our special challenge playing our money game to win some very cool key penguin, monkey and pig key chains with eyes that light up eyes when you press a button is off to a fantastic start! Everyone is using strengthening behaviors.  It’s sometimes hard for me to keep up with handing out money for all the creative and thoughtful actions I am seeing.

AfterSchool Note

The kids have been creatively at work with Marjorie on Thursdays making special valentines, something Marjorie is famous for in the Tudor Family business.

We are going to have a special challenge in the next few weeks playing our money game to win some very cool key chains that I found at Brown Roberts, monkeys, penguins and pigs that squeak and light up their eyes when you press a button. So practice up on your best strengthening behaviors, like raising your hand instead of interrupting, helping others and making uplifting complements and leave behind your put-down behaviors and you might be the proud winner of a great new toy.

Exciting News from AfterSchool

This week Mckeena, Sloan and Olivia decided to review the muscle testing exercises we did at the beginning of the year to experience the effects of strengthening and weakening behaviors.

(In the beginning I think they were mostly interested in playing the money game that goes also with doing strengthening or weakening behaviors, Mckenna is close to making $500 dollars.)

Julian got to watch and then try muscle testing his behaviors for the first time.

I loved watching the brave questioning the girls were doing as they tested some of the ways they had reacted to their sisters in the past when their sisters did things that they didn’t like.

Then Olivia had a Brainstorm. Do you remember this game from last year?  The person being tested keeps their arm up and out to the side.  Then they think about a behavior or response that they want to test.  After they can vividly see the behavior in their mind, I place a weight in the hand they are holding up.  If the behavior is weakening their arm drops towards the ground.  So as Olivia was testing something she had said to her sister, and watching her arm continually drop towards the floor she said, “ Hey I get it!  When my arm falls down it’s a Put Down.  Get it? I can’t hold it up.  I am putting it down. What I am thinking about is a Put Down!”

Meanwhile Daniel has been working on www.freerice.com during library time and has made over 3000 grains of rice. Daniel noticed that Freerice is now donating all rice to Haiti, and he is making a great contribution!

Wow, what an exciting moment we all got to see in AfterSchool!

Marlboro AfterSchool

This week in AfterSchool we welcomed Majorie Tutor who will be teaching on Thursdays. Marjorie was with us for three days this week so many of the students got to meet her.  Thursday she taught watercolors, the kids may not know how much of a treat this was because one of Marjorie’s teachers was her mother-in-law, TashaTutor, a famous story book illustrator.

We are missing big Paige, who is in Paris for this semester and still hope that she will return next year to play with us.  So please introduce yourself to the new AfterSchool teacher, Annie.  You can find her next week on the playground Monday thru Wednesdays.

New from MASP

We have some new faces in the AfterSchool this year, Sloan, Mckenna, and Broden to name a few.  We had a great first week, Daniel took center stage and taught everyone Bop Ball which is a game he helped create at the end of last year.  Plus, we reviewed using muscle testing to understand the effects of strengthening and weakening behaviors.  Remember this game from last year?  There are a few new twists…and the kids are learning fast how to win by paying attention to their own body and seeing how they feel when they talk and play in strengthening ways.  On top of that, each time they do something strengthening the kids earn play money which begins the path to their first ice cream social.
Please introduce yourself to the new AfterSchool teacher, Paige.  You can find her on the  playground Monday thru Thursday.  Last year Paige was part of the work study program with Marlboro College and this year she has joined me as part of our year round staff.

Next Week in the AfterSchool:
Monday…………No School
Tuesday…………Bop Ball in the gym
Wednesday…….Building Block City, (if you want to know more about this new game ask Daniel)
Thursday……….Drawing and Water Coloring
Friday……………Scavenger Hunt Brain Storming
Have a great weekend,

Rose

MASP 2009/2010

Hi Everyone,

I am happy to be returning for my second year to the AfterSchool.   There will be some new staff joining me this year.  We were all so sad to see Joanna and Greg leave, but they left us with some great ideas for fun people to take their place.  We are hoping to find at least one rock wall climber so we can offer that every week again.  We are also planning to have one day a week be a mini mad science day for our own little AfterSchool experiments!  There have been lots of requests for scavenger hunts and we think that’s a great idea too, so we may make that a bi-weekly event!

September is going to be all about winged-things…..We have 20 sets of 3 foot tall wings waiting for kids to specialize with glitter, beads and who knows what else, transforming the very child who makes them into magical flying creatures! (Think Marlboro Fair or Halloween!!!)

Can’t wait to see everyone on the playground, Rose Watson

On Tuesdays Maria plans to have a variety of outdoor activities and on Thursdays the kids will work with clay.
