HALLOWEEN REQUEST
We would love to barrow your white Christmas Lights for the Halloween Dance.  Please mark your strings with your name on masking tape so we can return them to you after the dance.  You can drop them off in the office, I will have a box marked Halloween lights there.

OCT. 22 - EARLY RELEASE DAY!!!
The AfterSchool will be offering a play-date called Get Hooked on AfterSchool from 12:00 to 3:15.
Please have kids bring their lunch just like a regular school day and we will provide milk.  After lunch we will have some playtime then watch the movie “Hook”.  Plenty of popcorn will be served and after the movie we will copy the “lost boys” with a not-so-imaginary food fight!!!!
Cost for Get Hooked will be $17.00.  Please fill out the following form and send in your payment before Friday, Oct 15th to reserve space.

The kids are very excited because they reached their challenge goal of $2000 this week!  We have been using using muscle testing to learn about behaviors that strengthen or weaken us.  And we found out that doing things like interrupting, using mimicking tones, or blaming are weakening us, and not only the person who is doing it but every one in the room!  On the other hand, listening to each other and helping each other strengthens us all. You can try this at home too.  Here’s the test….

Simply hold your arm out straight at shoulder height.  Have a friend near you with half full water bottle with a handle. Now, think to yourself, “I am doing my best to keep my arm up.”  When you have that thought firmly in mind, have your friend place the handle of the water bottle over your fingers.  (You will not use any extra muscle to hold your arm up once your friend places the water bottle in your hand, this is just to get a sense of your normal muscle strength).

Now think of something negative you say about yourself and when you have that thought firmly in your mind, have your friend put the water bottle back in your hand.  Using no extra muscle than you did the first time to keep your arm up, watch how a negative thought zaps your energy! Now try a positive thought and feel the difference.

Getting back to the kids reaching their challenge goal.  We have our own monetary system which uses play money as a metaphor for our energy stores.  Weakening behaviors cost us $5 and strengthening behaviors profit us $5.  The AfterSchool team had the goal of making $2000 to have an ice-cream party and this week the goal was made.  So next week we will have the party and everyone who was on the team, even for one day, will get ice-cream at some point in afterschool!

A vote is being polled this week and next for the reward for the meeting the new challenge goal, which the kids raised to $3000!  Right now the highest votes are for a pizza disco party!!!!

We are also working on our Halloween Costumes and making lots of origami boxes and cranes to put on our origami chain.  Thanks to Wes who taught us how to make the box this week!

Hi Everyone,
We are having a fabulous time at AfterSchool, filling the hours with kickball, capture the flag, drawing and board games.  Last week we started some of our promised enrichment classes.  We were bogeying to music on Monday.

WOW!!! there were some great moves by Calvin, Cooper, Paul Skye, Grace, Izzy, Paige and Devin!  I felt like I was watching a great break dance competition.  Tuesday started soccer with a bang.

And now we are brainstorming the next classes…but first let’s talk HALLOWEEN!!!!  We are definitely planning a dance party with a few surprise performances….If you want to join us come to Afterschool on Thursdays.  We are going to focus on designing and putting together our costumes and the costumes for the performances. We may be asking you to bring some materials from home depending on how elaborate your costume is, and we will have some materials available at the AfterSchool.

Thanks to a very generous anonymous donation MASP is able to offer a one day a week or two day a week matching scholarship. The fee will be $30 for one day and $60 for two days for a month and the donation will cover the other half of the cost. Please call school and book this with Gail (until Francie returns). And just to entice you further, on Mondays and Fridays Rose will guide the kids in an origami project to make a rainbow train of cranes. On Tuesdays Maria plans to have a variety of outdoor activities and on Thursdays the kids will work with clay.
