Judy’s Class – May 14, 2012

 Last week…

Many thanks to Mirian (after-school) and Carol for taking over while I was in Brattleboro at a math workshop on Wednesday – “Mathematics as a Second Language”. What an inspiring class! I am excited to incorporate many ideas that were presented. Our focus in math from now until the end of the year will be mastering number sense– so important as a basis when moving into third grade.

Our mapping unit continues –  Moms – hope you loved your “heart map”. This week we will continue with mapping the world we know and focus on classroom mapping. Making 3-dimensional models is one of the best ways to introduce mapping skills.

Spelling word work continues. Older students will be focusing on the three sounds of –ed endings. Younger students will be focusing on ending blends –nd and –nk.

The end of the year schedule is filling up. Here are some things to put on your calendar.

  • Early release day – 11:30 Wednesday, May 16
  • Hogback Day – May 18th, Rain date – May 25th  Please make sure your child dresses appropriately. Some suggestions: hat, layered clothing, sunblock, extra water, good hiking shoes
  • May 28th – no school
  • May 30th – Poetry at Ann’s studio – half of the class in the morning, half of the class in the afternoon
  • June 8th – Judy out, Laura Dinwiddie subs with Carol
  • June 15th – Preview Day – Students spend a little time in their next year classroom

Have a great week!

Judy and Carol

Judy’s Class – April 30, 2012

Welcome back! We are in the final stretch and we have lots of things to do! We began our mapping theme before vacation with the reading of Penny Maps the World”, a story about all the important places a dog might map. The students loved it! We also talked about looking at things from a bird’s eye view perspective and played a matching game looking at pictures from the side and from above.

We are planning on getting outside to do more science observations, head up to Hogback on occasion and do some mapping of the playground and beyond.

Don’t forget the reading log that is on the back of the letter. Please try to read with your child a little bit every night.

Spelling words for older students are “er”, “ir”, and “ur” words.

Spelling words for younger students are “ay” words.

We will continue with a variety of measuring activities in math. Older students will also continue to work on number sense and math facts. They have been playing a game called get to $1.00. Game rules will be sent home this week. Play the game with your child when you have time! It’s fun!

Our last V.I.P. was Jeremiah. It was great fun getting to know him better! If your child has not been V.I.P. it will happen soon!

I hope you had a restful vacation!

Judy’s Class – April 16, 2012

 Last week…

The highlight last week was, of course, the Learning Fair. Students did an incredible job setting up the class, making signs, deciding on where they would work and gather the materials they needed. We had a great turn out and the class was simply buzzing for the first hour. The students took their jobs and stations seriously and interacted with our visitors in a pretty amazing way. Thank you for participating. We all had a great time and hope you did too!

We will segueing into our last theme of the year – Mapping Skills. This is a very broad topic. Our goal is for students to develop a basic understanding of mapping language and skills. Our hope is to get outside and do many of our activities on the playground and at Hogback Mountain.

Ask your students the following questions for more information…

  • What have you been measuring in math class? (youngers)
  • What items do you use to measure? (youngers)
  • What are the sticker book math problems about? (olders)
  • What is the story “Nimby” about?
  • Who was our V.I.P. last week? What did he share?
  • What was your favorite part of the Learning Fair?
  • Is it hard coming up with your own sentences at word work time?
  • What song are you learning about saving water?
  • What does a “bossy r” do to the “a” sound (ar)?
  • What kind of poem did you write about spring?

Have a great vacation!!

Judy and Carol

Judy’s Class – April 9, 2012

 Last week…

Art for Water was a great connection to our water and weather theme. The artist, Christine, spent time with each class brainstorming water words with the students. They then completed a piece of the water installment with their own reflection of what water means to them. Some students wrote about what they liked to do with water while others wrote about Hurricane Irene. Some students just drew pictures or wrote a poem. You can see the finished product in the upstairs hallway.

The experience with Christine was a springboard to more discussion about water in our world and how some people do not have access to clean water. We also talked about how much water we use (and sometimes waste). Ask your child about ways that we waste water and what we can do to change our habits.

On Wednesday afternoon, we watched Matt’s class perform their shadow puppet plays based on Greek mythology. They did a great job. The scripts are written with such clever humor!

We are looking forward to the Learning Fair on Wednesday evening at 6:30. Your child will spend about 20 minutes in their classroom being hosts and hostesses for our guests. They can then check out the exciting displays in the other classrooms.

Coming up…

On Monday, April 16th, the class will be going to the Brattleboro Museum to check out the new tree exhibits. We will be leaving at 8:30 and return by recess.

Ask these questions for more news!

  • Who was our V.I.P. last week? What is something new you learned about him?
  • What are you writing about at writing time?
  • What is the water song you are learning?
  • What did you write about for “Art for Water”?
  • What are you measuring in math? (youngers)
  • What do you have to figure out in math with your cube building?

Have a great week!

Judy’s Class – April 2, 2012

Last week…

Student-led conference day is one of my favorite days of the school year. Students worked very hard preparing and were ready to share. The class was buzzing with excitement and focus at the same time. I actually had very little to do that day as the students had planned out their hour so well. If you would like to meet to have a separate conference, please let me know. Student-led conferences take place in every classroom. Each year prepares them for the next. And every year you will see their confidence grow along with their ability to talk about their learning and progress in a way that shows ownership and responsibility. Thank you for doing such a great job when meeting with your child.

Many thanks to Carol, Christine and Marian for taking over while I was out sick for two days. The class continued to function smoothly! Students continued with spelling, math and “free write” routines. On Friday afternoon we enjoyed the Jacksonville Blues Band concert in the Outback – a great way to end the week! Some great dancing, I must say!

Math homework for youngers…

Younger students will be taking home (Tuesday) a small math packet to do with you. You may have to help out with some directions and use some household materials for counting (bean, beads, etc.). Please use your judgment for the length of time to spend on the packet. Your child may want to whip through it in one sitting (great if that works), or do one page at a time. Work on it at your own pace – no stress about it! Please return when you finish.

READING SHEETS WILL BE ALSO SENT HOME AGAIN. Please return your March Reading Challenge form!

We are looking forward to the Tuesday “Art For Water” artist in residence project. Christine Destrempes will be meeting with each class to raise awareness of the water crises in our world through discussion, creativity and collaboration. The final project will be on display at the Learning Fair on April 11, 6:30-8:00.

Speaking of the Learning Fair, we are asking that your child spend about 20 minutes in the classroom to help out while people come through. Please sign up for the time your child can be in the class and return it this week. Thanks!

Judy’s Class – March 26, 2012

Last week…

We had a full week of preparation for student-led conferences. Students were busy filling in their reflection sheets, decided what to share and organized their work. They are all looking forward to this day! We did a major spring-cleaning on Friday – what great cleaners! We also took time to enjoy this most beautiful weather. On Wednesday, we headed outside with science journals and tools in hand. Students caught insects, worms, sketched small leaves, squirrels, and more!

On Thursday morning, we headed to the Latchis Theater for the Winham Orchestra show – “Meet the Orchestra”. Some student art was shared during one of the pieces and we were thrilled that one of Althea’s pieces was chosen for the slide show – congratulations, Althea!

Ask your child these questions for more news and information.

  • What did you do to prepare for student-led conferences?
  • Was it hard to reflect on your work?
  • What area of work do you think you made the most progress?
  • Is there an area of work that you would like to focus more on?
  • What did you do in P.E.? Rhythms? Tech? Library? Spanish?
  • Who was our V.I.P. last week? What is something new you learned about her?
  • What was your science observation? What else did you find outside?
  • What are some cloud names?
  • Where did we have All School Sing?

March Reading Challenge continues! Please remember to return your form by the end of the week or the beginning of next week.

Coming up…

The Learning Fair is on Wednesday, April 11th 6:30-8:00. We will be asking your child to be in the classroom for a 20-minute period. The time slots will be 6:30-6:50, 6:50-7:10, and 7:10-7:30. Think about the time that works best for you. We will be sending the schedule home next week – please sign your child’s name in the slot and return to school.

Happy spring!

Judy and Carol

Judy’s Class – March 19, 2012

Spring has sprung! What beautiful weather! We are hoping to take advantage of these warm days by getting outside when possible. Last week we headed out on Wednesday afternoon to observe clouds. Ask them about the Eric Carle book we read and what they noticed when looking up. Ask your child the following questions for more news.

  • How do you play “missing number”? (youngers)
  • How do you solve the problems about pairs and teams? What strategies do you use? (olders)
  • What is a vowel team? What is the rule? (olders)
  • Who is our V.I.P. this week?
  • When you play “Collect 50 cents” what are some trades you can make? (olders)
  • What did Pam read to you in library? What are you doing in tech?
  • What did you cover and count on your foot tracing? (youngers)
  • What are some cloud names?
  • What is a cloud made of?
  • Did you like the “Harp and Soul” concert?

We are looking forward to our student-led conference on Monday! This week students will begin to look at their work and reflect on their progress. They will also reflect on how they see themselves as a learner – what’s challenging? What comes easy? What would you like to get better at? Students will think about a goal they would like to work on for the rest of the year and have a conversation with you on Monday about it.

PLEASE CALL GAIL TO SIGN UP FOR A ONE-HOUR SLOT!

Coming up…

LEARNING FAIR on Wednesday, April 11th at 6:30. Student work will be on display in all classes. Students will be asked to spend about 20 minutes in the class to help out. More information will be coming soon along with a schedule to sign your child up.

Enjoy this gorgeous weather!

Judy and Carol

P.S. We are looking for paper towel rolls. Please send them in if you have some!

Judy’s Class – March 12, 2012

Wind, wind, and more wind! Our discussions continue about wind and what it is. Hmmmm, interesting question: “Trees make wind”, “Cars make wind”, “Wind is air”. I think they are slowing understanding that wind is moving air. Students observed a demonstration of heat moving air with a “wind serpent” and candle – ask them about it. Then, of course, we just had to make kites. What did that look like with 19 kids? Not too bad! With lots of cooperation each student made one. If your child’s kite did not make it in the flying test they will be taking home the “skeleton”. Have fun at home trying different materials to the frame. Some kites flew better than others. Of course, the biggest challenge was doing in the slush/mud outside – quite a mess! So glad we caught it all on camera! Next week we will be looking up to the sky for some cloud observations if the weather holds.

Spelling homework and routines continue for both olders and youngers. We usually focus on a specific word pattern. Youngers have been working on short vowel words. Older students are working on blend endings and the magic e. A math packet will go home this week for older students – due March 23rd.

 What are student-led conferences?

On Monday, March 26th student will only spend one hour in school. At that time, they will be leading conferences. Your child will share his/her work with you from spelling, math, reading, and everything in between. Students will be working hard preparing by gathering and choosing work to share, talk about their progress and reflect on goals for the rest of the year. I will be in the classroom to check in, guide your child along and stick to their hour-long schedule. It’s great if you can make it on that day when other groups will be sharing at the same time (4-5 families for an hour block), because there is an atmosphere of celebration. Students take pride in this process and look forward to sharing with you. I will be happy to meet at a separate time if you feel the need – especially if you’re new to the school! Please call Gail to sign up for a one hour slot!

Ask these questions for more info…

  • What happened when Judy put the wind serpent over the candle? Why?
  • Why did you trace your foot in math? (youngers) What did you use to measure? What were the results?
  • What’s an even or odd number? Tell me about the partners and teams activity. (olders)
  • What does the “magic e” do to a word?
  • How did you make your kite? Who was your partner? What was the challenge?
  • What challenge did you do with Mr. H?
  • What did you do in rhythms class with Kate?
  • Who did you read with in Matt’s class? What did you read?
  • What are a lot of kids doing with the name quilt?
  • What’s going on in the forts?

Enjoy this warm weather!                                      Judy and Carol

Judy’s Class – March 5, 2012

Last week…

It’s great to be back from vacation! It’s also great to have some snowfall. It makes recess all the more fun. Thank you for sending your children to school dressed for the weather – they had a blast at Friday recess time sliding and rolling in the snow. Ask your child the following questions for more news.

  • What are you reading in your reading group?
  • What kind of problems are you solving in math?
  • What are a couple of different strategies that you can use?
  • Who were the last two V.I.P.’s?
  • What is something new you learned about them?
  • What was The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind about?
  • Who did you read with in David’s class?
  • What writing activity did you do with your shoes?
  • What is the March Reading Challenge?
  • Who had a birthday last week?
  • Who is Gordon?

March Reading Challenge begins this week. All of the information has been sent home in Friday notes. Students need to decide on an amount of time to read each day and record it on the calendar every day. This calendar will be used instead of their usual weekly reading log. Reading to your child also counts! We are hoping that everyone will participate.

Coming up…

On Monday, March 26th you will be invited to your child’s class for Student-led conferences. Your child will be working the previous week organizing and reflecting on their progress in order to share it with you. So mark this date on your calendar! You will have a choice of several one-hour slots to sign up. I will let you know when Gail has the sign up schedule.

Have a great week!

Judy and Carol

Judy’s Class – February 27, 2012

Back to school after a long break! I hope yours was as restful as mine. Our last winter sports day is today!

Two weeks ago…

Weather, weather, weather – there are so many possible topics and activities! We focused on wind two weeks ago first brainstorming wind words. We looked a several videos – quite a variety. Students then wrote a poem and created a “wind” painting with straws and paint. Ask them about it!

Although the 100th day of school was our short Monday, we still had time for some fun activities. Students created designs with 100 things, made a 100 name quilt, made bead necklaces, 100 piece puzzles and made books of categories. We are also playing lots of math games about 100. Students are also working on addition and subtractions stories and doing a great job using different strategies.

Spelling work continues. Every once in a while we add a new word activity to mix it up. They are all quite independent during this time!

Valentine’s Day was a great success. Everyone decorated an envelope and passed out Valentines. Many thanks to Merou, Noa, Amalia and Phoenix C. for bringing in some sweet treats.

Questions to ask…

§      How many 10’s are in 100?

§      Who was our last V.I.P.? What story did we read?

§      What are some adding strategies you are learning?

§      What did you do on the 100th day of school?

Welcome back!

Judy and Carol

Judy’s Class – Februrary 13, 2012

 Last week…

Ask your child about the different water experiments we are doing in the class. Does salt water freeze? If so, which one freezes faster – plain or salt water?  When snow is packed in a cup and melts, will there be more, less or the same amount of water? Lots of great conversations, wonderings, and ideas have been shared.

Thank you for coming to the music concert. The students did a wonderful job! It’s always fun to see it come together with all violinists. We are hoping to better organize violins. The first step is to make sure they are well labeled. We are trying to keep up with it but would appreciate it if you would add a name tag when/if they fall off.

Valentine’s Day is on Tuesday. If students plan on bringing in cards for their friends we ask that they include everyone in the class. Student names are below.

Jade, Madison, Zinabu, Belle, Hunter, Noa, Amalia, Senait, Phoenix C., Phoenix L.K., Althea, Willow, Hannah, Camilla, Ritter, Jeremiah, Waylund, Merou, Sarah

Ask these questions for more information!

  • How are you keeping track of the temperature?
  • What are the seasons of the year?
  • How many months are in each season?
  • What book did we read about the months and seasons?
  • What did we do at “Open Mike” at all school sing?
  • What are some adding strategies you are learning?
  • What is the subtraction roll and record game you played?
  • What stories are you reading in your reading group?
  • What are ways that you find “focus power”?

Have a great week and wonderful vacation!!

Judy and Carol

Judy’s Class – February 6, 2012

 Last week…

We are so busy each day with spelling activities, writing workshop time, math, math, and more math! Our theme time focus last week was all about the thermometer and temperature. And, of course, we connected it to the water cycle. Students are learning how to read the thermometer – a little tricky with Fahrenheit and Celcius sides. We will be keeping track of the temperature in Marlboro on a daily basis. We are conducting science experiments connected to water coming up with questions and hypotheses. Students are also coming up with their own questions that they can then test out.

Ask your child these questions for more info…

  • What is the water cycle song?
  • What were the results of the water/snow experiment?
  • What sentence activity are you doing? (olders)
  • How do you play “Beat the calculator”? What’s challenging when you’re the “calculator”? What’s challenging when you’re the “brain”? (olders)
  • What was your survey about? (youngers)
  • What was Clementine’s talent?
  • Who did you read with from David’s class?
  • What are you doing at recess time on the icy playground?
  • What songs are you singing in music?
  • What do you do at choice time?
  • What did Pam read to you in library?

 VALENTINE’S DAY – What we do…

Students can bring in a Valentine card for their friends on that day – most kids bring them in! If you choose to do so, we ask that you send in one for every student. We will also enjoy a special snack. We will also celebrate the 100th day of school on that day! Below is a class list for your convenience…

Phoenix C, Althea, Willow, Ritter, Noa, Waylund, Hannah, Jeremiah, Merou, Amalia, Camilla, Madison, Hunter, Zinabu, Senait, Phoenix L.K.

If you would like to bring in a healthy treat for Valentine’s Day, please let me know!

Think snow?

Judy’s Class – Janurary 30, 2012

Judy’s Class – January 30,2012

 Last week…

It’s all about the water cycle! Ask your child about water in our world and the cycle it travels. They may not remember the words: precipitation, evaporation, accumulation, condensation, but they certainly understand the concept! We are learning a song about it too!

Although we had two delays, we kept our routines/work in tact. Older students went home with a new spelling word list and younger students received their first spelling word list (short a vowel words). They did a great job with the new word work routines. The older students also volunteered their time to demonstrate how to do each activity.

In math, younger students are working on surveys and showing their data. Older students are working on “number strings” – adding more than two numbers together. They are learning strategies using what they already know. Please practice double math facts – 2+2, 9+9 – a must to know by heart when adding multiple addends. Here’s an example: 3+5+7 – If you know 3+7=10 then 10+5=15, 6+3+6 – if you know 6+6=12 then you can count up 3 more. They are really thinking hard!

Reminders…

  • Please make sure your child’s violin has a name label.
  • Slippers are allowed in the class – much more comfortable than boots. If you have an extra pair send them in!
  • A new math packet will be sent home this week for olders.
  • Progress reports will be sent home mid week in your child’s home-school folder.

More questions to ask…

  • Who was our V.I.P. last week? What did she read? What did she share?
  • What are you writing about at writing workshop time?
  • What are some of your spelling activities?
  • What is Judy’s story about?

Let it snow!

Judy and Carol

Judy’s Class January 23, 2012

Judy’s Class   January 23, 2012

Last week…

It has felt like coming back from another vacation after our five-day break! I am looking forward to four uninterrupted weeks! We have begun our weather/water theme with an introduction to water in our world. The students broke up into small groups and took turns spinning and stopping a globe – was it land or water? We came to the overwhelming conclusion that there is much more water on earth! This week we will continue our weather studies with an introduction to the water cycle.

Mid-year progress reports will be coming home at the end of January. It will be sent home in your child’s home-school folder so keep an eye out next week! We have been working on reading assessments with each student to monitor their progress. Math continues with younger students working on surveys and gathering data. They are also working on number sense – ask them about “dot addition”. The older students are working on solving problems with three addends. They are also working on math facts up to 20 – that will continue all year.

A new spelling list will go home for the older students. They will be adding new activities to their word work repertoire this week. Younger students will also begin spelling (no homework) with a focus on short vowel words. This week’s focus will be the short a sound.

We are trying to incorporate more quality writing time. This “just write” writing workshop usually begins with a short mini lesson. Students then go off to write about whatever “grabs them”. They are often inspired with picture books or when students share. We have a variety of stories about pets, families and baseball to name a few.

Ask your child these questions for more information…

  • Who was our V.I.P.? What is something new you learned about her?
  • Is there more water or land on Earth?
  • What story are you writing? What’s hard about writing? What’s easy?
  • What strategies do you use when trying to write a word?
  • What are you doing at recess?
  • Tell me about the story The Talented Clementine.
  • What did Pam read in library?

Stay warm!

Judy’s Class – January 3, 2012

Judy’s Class – January 3. 2012

Welcome back! I hope you had a restful vacation with family and friends. After all of the excitement and hard work with our bird fundraiser/lunch/quilt raffle, etc., it will feel great to get back to routines. Didn’t the students do a great job? I can’t even begin to thank the many people who helped out for our huge fundraiser. We made almost $500!! I stopped in to see Mike Cough during the vacation and he was very impressed indeed. We will be holding the money until spring when their project begins. If you drive by the museum now you will see the addition they are putting on at the walkway. They are busy!

We are happy to welcome three new members of the class! Willow (moving from Jen’s room), Jeremiah, and Waylund will make 18 students in all! Jen is also gaining two new students so, once again, our configuration changes. Starting in January, Jen’s room will be a full day K/1. While we will still work together in some ways, her first graders will not join us in the afternoon. However, I’m sure we will still gather together at times!

We will begin the new year getting to know our new students and returning to routines. Our new unit will be water/weather. We’ll be having lots of fun learning about the water cycle and how important water is in our world. If you didn’t get a chance to see the amazing bird research at the fundraiser, it will be on display at our learning fair.

No new spelling words this week although new routines will be introduced.

Reminders…

  • Don’t forget that winter sports begin on January 9th. Keep your fingers crossed for snow!
  • Now that the weather is getting colder, please make sure your child comes dressed appropriately with snow pants, mittens and hat.
  • No school on January 16th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • No school on January 17th/18th – Teacher in service days

Happy New Year!

Judy and Carol

  • We are still hoping for dessert donations for our lunch. Please let us know if you’re willing to bring in some baked goods.
  • Raffle tickets for our bird quilt will be on sale next week. The quilt will be on display in the hallway. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Tickets will also be on sale at our lunch.
  • There will be no new spelling lists this week.
  • We are looking for a family to take care of our class gerbil. Please let us know if you are willing and able!
  • It is getting cold out there! We are asking that students come to school with snowpants, hats, mittens, boots, etc.. – especially with snow on the ground!
  • Boxes are in the hallway for our food drive collection. Please give!

December 15th – HOLIDAY CONCERT!! 6:30, Whittemore Theater, Marlboro College

Please come 10 or 15 minutes early so we can prepare.

After the play (second on the program), your child can join you until it’s time to go back to the stage for the ending performance. Please save enough seating room for them. We are asking that all students stay with their parents at the end of the concert and do not run around in the theater.

We hope to see you at the theater on Thursday evening!

P.S. We are very happy to have Carol Brooke deBock in both my and Jen’s rooms. She is fitting in beautifully!!

Have a “restful” week!

FOOD DRIVE

Judy and Jen’s rooms will be sponsoring a food drive for the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry. We will be getting the news out this week. Some of our lunch proceeds may also be used to support this great service.
