From Nurse Susan, Immunizations, exams, etc.

What a fabulous month this has been! Seeing your children again and meeting new students has been so enjoyable. And it seems everyone is pretty healthy and happy! What a great start to the new year.

A few bits of information: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children have a yearly physical exam that also includes a developmental, behavioral, and learning assessment. This is different from a sports physical or a visit because of an illness. Pediatricians are the experts on children’s health and YOU are the experts on your children. Parents and pediatricians…what a team!

Starting with the next school year in the fall of 2016, a philosophical exemption for immunizations will no longer be allowed.

Medical and religious exemptions will still be allowed. A recent article in the Brattleboro Reformer (http://www.reformer.com/latestnews/ci_28892192/some-vermonters-may-get-religion-vaccine-outs-narrow) mentioned this but it remains unclear if religious documentation will be required for a religious exemption. As I learn more, I will pass on any information regarding this. Please be in touch if you need more information on your child’s immunization status.

www.healthychildren.org. This is a wonderful website for parents! It’s full of up to date information and easy to navigate. Check it out!

If you have health insurance through Vermont Health Connect (VHC), there are two navigators in our area to help you re-enroll or enroll, Dr. Dynasaur included. The current VHC navigators are Amanda at SEVCA – 802-722-4575 x 153 and Pat Field at Putney Family Services – 802-257-8814.
