Free Computer Fun Ideas for Long Dark Days

I’ve had many requests from the students to let parents know about Tux Paint – the free drawing software we use at school. If you’re online, you can download Tux Paint for your home computers for free – just google “Tux Paint” – there are versions for Mac & PC. It’s great fun & the kids love it. Playing with Tux Paint can improve mouse control skills and teach kids how to troubleshoot and manage menus and files, all while using their creative minds to draw. I recommend agreeing to a certain amount of computer time before you get started – it’s easy to spend too much time in front of the screen!
There are also links to many free, web-based educational games on our website. Each classroom page has links to age-appropriate games, and the library page has a master list of fun things I’ve stumbled across. I’m pretty selective, and you’ll notice that most of the games I recommend do not have any commercial or media tie-ins. I also recommend using the Firefox browser because of its excellent ad-blocking capabilities.
