'07-'08 School Year Calendar

Note From Francie 1/8/08

On Monday morning the sounds of drums reverberated from the kindergarten room. Books of all shapes and sizes were folded and cut in the library. Storyboards for Kamishibai storytelling were drawn in Jodi’s room. Kids in pottery saw a video and began working on different vessels. Kids created a human sculpture by connecting their bodies in different poses. Winter Workshops are off to a good start. Remember to reserve the evening of Monday, February 18 for our Winter Workshop Showcase.

The January thaw provided warm temperatures and soft snow – just right for the skiers and boarders at Mount Snow. Gail, Janie and the alternative Winter Sports group enjoyed tubing at the White House while Liz made sure all the skaters were ready for their lessons with Mollie Burke and then had fun skating on their own.

Meanwhile back at school students are engaged and involved in learning about light and optics in the 5th-6th class; writing and sharing water myths in the 3rd-4th class; presenting Insect Research projects to classmates and parents in the Primary room; working on I projects (independent research) in the Junior High; and, last but by no means least, selling stamps and sorting and delivering mail in the Kindergarten as the post office is in full swing. Stop by and mail a letter to your favorite student!

Today my reading group in the Primary and I read Something Beautiful by Sharon Dennis Wyeth. In this story a little girl who lives in a tough urban neighborhood looks for beauty. She finds it all around her in the outdoor fruit and vegetable stand, on the playground where kids are shooting hoops, and in a baby’s laugh. At the end of the story she makes her neighborhood more beautiful and herself more powerful by cleaning up broken glass in the courtyard and washing graffiti off the door. I was reminded of the responsibility and opportunity and power we each have to make the world a better place and of how important it is to communicate that to our kids. May you find this as inspiring as I did.

Please take a moment to complete the attached about the After School Program (they can be found at the office). We need your input. Please return the survey by next Friday, January 18. the MASP steering committee will be calling every school family as a follow up to make sure that we have as much information as possible. Thanks for your help with this!
