'07-'08 School Year Calendar

Note From Francie 2/8/08

On Tuesday WTSA reported that all the schools in Windham Central Supervisory Union were closed. This caused confusion for many of you. Because the weather and road conditions in Marlboro are often different from Townshend or Jamaica and because we have our own buses, we always make our own call about school cancellation or delays. Unless “Marlboro School in Marlboro, VT” is reported, we’re open. Again, your best source of information is the school web page, marlboroschool.net, or WTSA or WKVT. Both of these radio stations also have websites listing cancellations and two hour delays.

At Sing today the Primary class performed their “Doubles Rap” to great acclaim. Judy wrote the rap and the kids have learned it as a way to memorize important math facts. On Monday afternoon at our staff professional development meeting we discussed the math program and all the ways in which we can support students in becoming mathematical thinkers. We recognized the importance of kids knowing the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Several teachers described ways in which they enlist you to help your kids learn these. Telling time and making change at the store are also good ways to encourage them to sharpen their math skills. And, for students in 3rd-8th grades, you support their problem solving in Monday Night Math. Thanks for all you do!

Did you hear the NPR piece on the importance of sitting down to dinner as a family and having a good conversation? I was interested to learn that this is a strong predictor of children’s success in school. Maybe you can combine some of the math ideas above with a good talk over meatloaf!

Thanks for your responses to the MASP survey. It’s clear that the program is needed and valued. It’s also clear that the cost is high. Lisa, the school board, the MASP Steering Committee and I are working hard to find ways to make the program affordable and to make it sustainable. Stay posted!

The Junior High is once again planning a Valentine’s Dance! Come with your kids and enjoy this fun community event. As always, a gentle reminder to keep an eye on your child and help him or her to behave appropriately and be safe.
