Note From Francie 3/14/08
How are you doing with your reading contract? One parent told me that it’s helping her find more time for the pleasure reading she enjoys while it’s encouraging her husband to get to his magazines and newspapers. And, of course, this is great modeling for their kids who are reading, as well!

I wish you all could have been at Sing this morning. With Ellen off pedaling across the country, Tim is relying more on the kids to create the program. And they are rising to the occasion. Charlotte helped M.C. Lindsey read two poems about weather, the current theme in the Primary Room. Sheldon explained why “weather” and “whether” are homonyms. Frida told a joke. Ben, Mitchell, Daniel, Isobel, and Grace (all in Jodi and Brenda’s class) kept our focus on the March Reading Challenge by presenting book reviews that invite us to read everything from Owen and Mzee, non-fiction about a hippo and a chimp, to the fabulous fantasy of the Star of Kazaam and Harry Potter.
In addition, every week there will be an all school math problem related to Ellen’s bike ride. Kids submit answers to a box on the hall table and a winner is drawn at Sing. Congratulations to Marcus, this week’s winner. And this week’s problem: Ellen has already ridden 351 miles. On Thursday she rode 60 miles and on Wednesday she rode 62 miles. How many miles did she ride on all the other days?
MASP is undergoing some changes. The program is operating as always, but with new teachers. Lisa Hecht has stepped down as director. Her energy and enthusiasm got the program off to a good start and now we need to regroup. Several very capable people are filling in over the next week or two: Celena Colgate, Brenda Kennedy, Stephanie Betit, and Rose Watson. The MASP Steering Committee and I will be looking for a permanent replacement, so please give me the name of anyone who would be interested in working closely with us to provide a quality program in a safe and nurturing atmosphere.
