Construction of meaning; active engagement.
Less is more; depth over coverage.
These are two of the guiding principles of our elementary progressive educators group (part of the Coalition of Essential Schools) and they were demonstrated beautifully at MES yesterday.
After attending Liz’s Junior High conference, Jodi noted that Liz really seems to understand our Learning Realms. She was able to choose work that demonstrates each Realm and speak about it with clarity and confidence.
In the evening, David’s students presented their Cape Cod reports. Each student had gone in depth on his/her chosen topic and become an expert. Their studies started before they left for the Cape and continued during and after the trip.
The process of pulling together what they learned required writing and rewriting; using technology skills to create a slide show; and practicing, practicing, practicing. The result was an evening of excellence.
On another note, at All School Sing this morning Gigi and the Primary Class announced our food drive for the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry. They’ve made posters for the classrooms and are decorating boxes to put the food in. On Monday these will be in the front hall waiting for your contributions. Thanks in advance as we work together to help our neighbors and help our children learn the values of compassion and caring.
