'07-'08 School Year Calendar

Note from Francie, Sep. 21, 2007

Marlboro’s Volunteer Hall of Fame adds a new honoree! Hearty thanks to Tim Racine, father of Aliza and Tim, for cutting down dead trees in the wooded area of the playground. The woods are now safer and, as a bonus, the kids have lots of new materials to use for forts.

This past Wednesday teachers met with other teachers from all over southeastern Vermont in “networking” meetings set up by the Vermont Department of Education. Literacy, social studies, English as a second language, and differentiated instruction were some of the workshops attended by MES teachers. These in-service days can be a challenge for parents’ schedules. Please know that we appreciate your support of teachers’ furthering their own learning and learning from each other.

The new School Handbook is coming home today. Please use this as a reference when you have questions about school programs and policies. If there is anything you would like to see included in the handbook, please let me know.

Although we’re only into our third week of school, the halls and walls are filling with student work. The kindergarten and primary classes have completed self-portraits. Using mirrors to inspect themselves, they captured all sorts of details from eyebrows to freckles. Ellen’s students do this activity again at the end of the year. It’s easy to see the growth kids make.

Playground plans are moving forward. A small, but enthusiastic group met Thursday evening to approve final plans (see below) and figure out the next steps. Our first construction day will be Saturday, October 6th, 9-12. Prior to that we need to secure the use of a tractor and posthole digger – any leads? That morning we will dig the holes and place the upright posts. On successive Saturdays we will work on the framing, flooring, railings, and play equipment, in that order. Volunteers are needed for all of this and also to research cargo nets, materials donations, and climbing wall holds. Please let me know what piece of this you can help with. Either call me at school, 254-2668, or e-mail me at fmarbury (at) fc.wcsu.k12.vt.us.
